Baby sterilisers can be used for the obvious baby items such as bottles and dummies, but they can also be used to clean bottle teats, breast pumps and even non-baby objects such as cosmetic brushes and mobile phones. Whether they clean using steam, cold water or go in the microwave, sterilisers ensure your baby’s feeding equipment is free from harmful bugs and bacteria. This steriliser emits five minutes of UV light and five minutes of drying every two hours to keep the items inside sterile

Depending upon the cold water steriliser you use, you may need to assemble it out of the box. In our tutorial, we used the Milton cold water steriliser and sterilising tablets (as shown below). Having one sterilising solution all day is handy and it helps with multiple baby feeds, allowing you to take things in and out of it throughout the day. We love that there’s a spout to empty the solution and, as with most Milton products, there’s no need to rinse the sterilised items prior to using them. To use, simply wash your bottles, dummies and so on beforehand, put them in the solution, wait 15 minutes and you’re good to go. A great benefit of this method of sterilising is that as well as the bottles, you can also sterilise dummies, teething toys and so much more in the same solution. Once you are ready to use a bottle from the sterile water (after at least 15 minutes), you can do so by washing your hands and taking the required parts out. It’s that easy and this is our preferred method of sterilising MAM bottles when we are away from the house. How To Store The Bottles Once SterilisedUsing sterilizing equipment to clean baby bottles goes beyond just basic cleaning, it gives your little one added protection against bacteria that can cause some nasty tummy bugs. When to sterilize baby bottles Great for busy mums, this one-touch super fast steam steriliser can eradicate germs in five minutes and can keep the contents sterile for 24 hours if the lid is kept closed. This unit is one of the most advanced on the market, and a typical clean and dry cycle takes around 30 minutes. It has four operating modes. Sterilise mode uses a UV light to clean items in seven minutes, while a Dry mode has all items dry in 17 minutes. Auto mode switches from drying all equipment to sterilising mode automatically, and a Store mode activates the UV light for 60 seconds every hour after drying and sterilising, to keep everything sterile for up to three days.

Since babies have such fragile immune systems, they’re more susceptible to stomach-related illnesses, so it’s important to wash bottles with soap and warm water before sterilising them. Warm milk, in particular, can be a breeding ground for nasty germs, so washing them first will ensure any remaining milk bacteria is eliminated.

To ensure that the bottles are sterilised, it’s important that you leave them submerged for at least 15 minutes. After this time, you can leave them submerged in the sterile water until you are ready to use the bottles. However, as stated by the manufacturer, the contents will only remain sterile for up to 24 hours. Therefore, after 24 hours, if anything is left inside, you’ll need to clean them again and then create another sterile solution. 7. Once in place, take the assembled top part of the bottle to push the valve firmly in place (as shown in the image). Simply use a de-scaler that’s suitable for stainless steel i.e. kettle, iron and coffee machine de-scalers. Alternatively, you can use white vinegar, however this will need to be carried out more frequently as it’s not as effective as a purpose bought de-scaler. Steam gets into all those hard-to-reach places, so you can be reassured that it sterilises every surface, killing 99.9% of germs and harmful bacteria which may linger in bottles, teats, breast pumps and other accessories even after thorough washing.The final part of cleaning MAM bottles is the teat and it’s the part that requires the most effort. To clean the teat, we firstly recommend that you run it through your fingers whilst it’s submerged in the soapy water. Afterwards, use the other end of your brush to clean the inside of the teat (this is where the brush comes in very handy). Your baby will need around six clean bottles a day, so make sure you choose a larger model that can sterilise that amount in one go, or a super-fast microwave version that will only take a couple of minutes to work. After washing the MAM bottles with soapy water and rinsing it through, you can proceed to place them in the steriliser. With regards to how many bottles you can put in, it depends upon the size of the bottle. If you are using small MAM bottles, you can add up to six but if you are using large MAM bottles (as shown in the image), you can add up to four into the steriliser. This mini-fridge-style unit sterilises and dries bottles in 60 minutes and keeps the contents sterile for 24 hours, as long as the door is closed. Like other UV sterilisers, the Tommee Tippee Ultra UV unit has a few useful modes that can sterilise, dry, or do both consecutively. Our favourite setting is Storage mode, which allows the UV light to run every couple of hours to keep items sterilised throughout the day.
