About this deal

The ONLY reason I am not giving it a 5 star is because it is very, VERY depressing. The content of the story is very morbid and heartbreaking. Nonetheless, it’s clear our politics would have turned out better if we had had more Cathy Ashtons and fewer Boris Johnsons, more constructive collaboration and less alpha male showboating. That she never aspired to a cabinet job is to her credit. The inward-looking UK press ignored her achievements and showed scant interest in European questions overall. Her memoir ends on a melancholy note. She does not discuss Brexit but points out that no other British person will lead European foreign policy, at a crucial junction for the planet. She is, alas, the first and last. We pause at the edge of the trees and squint down into the next valley. My glasses are smudged. I take them off and polish them on my shirt. Sequel to the searing Once . . ., this tale of young people trying to survive in Poland during World War II is equally powerful.' They look like Jewish children. I can tell because they’re all wearing white armbands with a blue blob that I’m pretty sure is a Jewish star.

I'm going to say little else about the actual story here, other than the fact that I am in AWE of the bravery of this author to have written this story. To have explored this scenario as she did. Sadly, I was away holidaying with other people when I read this - and this is a novel where the horror of what's coming creeps up behind you, slowly, like a murderous lover. You know it's coming, but you just can't turn around and make it stop. The sort of book that really, really needs to be read where you know you will not be interrupted. In Ashton’s memoir of her time as a diplomat, And Then What?, she captures the moment vividly. “In Kyiv I was aware of a particular atmosphere that I had experienced before in Egypt, Tunisia and Libya. It was as if the wind had changed direction and you had to brace yourself against it as it whipped your breath away. A sense of excitement, mixed with fear and apprehension… Revolution, freedom, chaos – I could almost taste it.” Voodoo - REVENGE Spell - CURSE Spell - Destroy your Enemies VooDoo Ritual - Punish Him/Her - Regret Spell -Karma Revenge - X3 Times Casting! Zelda isn’t Jewish,’ I tell Richmal Crompton silently. ‘But she still needs protection because Nazis sometimes kill Catholic kids too. Specially Catholic kids who are a bit headstrong and cheeky.’ In the next valley there might be a house,’ I say. ‘With a really kind cook. Who’s made too much dinner and who’s looking for people to help eat the extra platefuls of delicious stew.’urn:lcp:then0000glei:epub:e25c3573-0d3f-43ed-9fe5-7a1de335746e Foldoutcount 0 Identifier then0000glei Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t0bw5mg6c Invoice 1652 Isbn 9780805090277

I'm not sure if I think this is a good book or not. On one hand I didn't enjoy it and it was quite confusing at times, but on the other it was original and interesting. We’re lying on our tummies, completely still except for a bit of panting. Zelda is clinging on to me. Her face is hot against my cheek. Her hands are gripping my arm. I can see that one of her fingernails is bleeding from pulling up ferns for Chaya.

Directly below us on the hillside, several Nazi soldiers jump to their feet in the long grass. They glare up the hill towards us. They throw away their cigarettes and shout at us. What I actually mean is does she want to hide, but I don’t say that either because I don’t want her to feel even more scared.

Then is not a post-apocalyptic survival story. The apocalyptic event, which is never fully explained, that led to London becoming a frozen wasteland sets the scene for the story, but this is far more a literary mystery than a story of survival. Down the hill I see the train disappearing round the next bend. I can tell it’s another death camp train full of Jewish people. It’s got the same carriages our train had, the ones that look like big wooden boxes nailed shut. Keep collections to yourself or inspire other shoppers! Other readers have complained it is bleak: it is wonderfully bleak. The prose is cold because the place is cold. Other readers have complained that it is confusing: it is wonderfully confusing. Myerson makes us work hard to understand who is who, what has really happened, what is real and what is in Izzy's head. Even at the very end, I'm not completely certain, but I don't mind that, in fact I love it. There’s a difficult balance here for a children’s author. My rule is that I don’t want to fudge, trivialize or evade how things were and are, but at the same time I don’t ever want to write a book that leaves young readers feeling worse about themselves and their world. A very difficult balance, which is why Once and Then took me years to write.Richmal Crompton isn’t holy or anything, but she’s a really good storywriter and in her books she keeps William and Violet Elizabeth and the other children safe even when they’re being extremely headstrong and cheeky.
