About this deal

Whilst we love our Urban Draw social competition community, we will not be held liable to you for any losses, damages, negligence, wrongful acts, infringement of your rights, or otherwise, even if they can be predicted in advance, when connected with: The symposium in 2020 should have been in Hong Kong but unfortunately due to protests and fears for the safety of holding such an event, it had to be cancelled. Little did we know the Covid-19 pandemic was around the corner and so it sadly would have been cancelled anyway. The act of urban sketching certainly existed long before the actual term or label of ‘urban sketching’ came about. Urban sketching essentially means sketching on location. One technique that's super popular currently and looks really nice is to give lines purposely a bit of a squiggly look. Instead of drawing a line as straight as you possibly can try to draw it as if you were super cold and shivering a little.

Number 7 on the Urban Sketchers Manifesto at the start of this post is “we share our drawings online”. While you are under absolutely no obligation to do this, as you get more confident, you may enjoy the experience of sharing your work with others, especially other sketchers. I have found you can create quite a bond with people all over the world through a shared love of sketching. Some people prefer to sketch solely on their own and then go online to share their work and communicate with others instead. Many urban sketchers these days use both approaches at different times. Because of that the subjects are quite often streets, buildings or other man-made landmarks, but they can just as well be objects, individual people or groups, animals and so on. This competition is operated under the laws of England and Wales and the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales. In this post , I talk you through how I would start an urban sketch when I’m on location. From sketching in pencil, adding details with ink, adding colour with watercolour, and adding contrast through to creating emphasis in your sketch. This is my process and is not the only way to produce a sketch, just some suggestions on how to go about getting started.Thumbnail sketching is a great habit to get into and will save you a lot of time and hassle down the road if you intend to sketch a scene for an hour or more.

Perhaps the subtle element that differentiates urban sketching from the act of sketching on location, that artists have partaken in for decades (or centuries), is telling a story with the sketch. As the name suggests, this particular type involves urban areas - cities, towns and villages - rather than the countryside far away from civilisation. I have recently interviewed sketching artist Ch’ng Kiah Kiean, who has been drawing outside for decades and travels the globe to hold lectures and join sketchwalks. The perfect example of how to do it right. The decisions of Urban Draw regarding all competition matters, whether the main, second or third prize competition , is final and binding. Urban Draw will not enter into correspondence regarding these matters. If you opt in to receive marketing, or join the Urban Draw social competition Community, we may send you marketing messages based on your communication preferences. Cities that have hosted the symposium in past years include Porto (Portugal), Manchester (UK), Amsterdam, (Netherlands) and Paraty (Brazil) amongst many others. The only way to start is to throw yourself into it. But there are ways to do this to set yourself up for a useful and positive first experience. It’s always a good idea to have a bit of a plan when you head out the door to sketch, even if you deviate from the plan later on. Otherwise, as I have in the past, you can wander around aimlessly not really knowing what to do, where to go, or what to sketch and before you know it, the time you allocated to sketch had disappeared. What materials you bring depends on your own preferences for sketching media. The only guideline is that they should be portable, so you'll want to look for things that are compact and relatively light. It is done on location, or ‘en plein air’, if you want to sound fancy. This means that you take all your materials with you to your subject (e.g. a pretty cathedral) and draw it there, rather than at home in your studio.

(https://youtu.be/lUdKNidTv-0) Especially in urban areas there is a lot of information coming at you at all times. You'll hear traffic, sirens, construction noises, there'll be smells, people walking past you and just a lot happening all at the same time. Secondly, it can complete the drawing. Capturing non-visual signals such as sounds, conversations, smells or other multisensorial experiences can complete the visual recording of the scene. If you’d like to take a little look through some of my sketchbooks, I have some flip-through videos over on my Youtube channel. If you start with the earliest sketchbook through to the most recent – you will definitely see a progression in technique and style. I’m always experimenting and trying out new ways of sketching, my style evolves over time, just like all other sketchers. Postal entries are limited to 1 free entry, per competition, per person/account, per postcard. Postcards sent in envelopes will be deemed as invalid. If ALL steps are not completed postal entries will be invalid. We hope we don’t ever have to, but we do reserve the right to withhold prizes if we believe there is good cause to do so.
