The last thing you want to do is discolor your favorite footwear. On the other hand, if you do have a specific pair of shoes you want to clean, it can be worth finding shoe cleaner products that are intended for one particular type of shoe. For all-white laces, a bleach solution will do wonders (just wear gloves for protection!). Place them in a small laundry or mesh bag, and soak for five minutes in a mix of 1tbsp bleach to 1 litre of water. Afterwards, remove the laces and either run them through the washing machine or rinse them under the tap. It’s best to clean any shoes by hand, especially if they’re new. If you’re tight on time and want to refresh an old pair, you can try cleaning canvas sneakers in the washing machine but note they may shrink or lose their shape. Place them first in a mesh bag and add a few old towels to balance and buffer the load. Choose a delicate cycle with cold or warm water and a low or moderate spin speed. Add a few drops of liquid dish soap to a bowl of water then dip in a soft-bristle brush or toothbrush and use it to gently scrub the shoe uppers. Start with the soles – With a sponge, brush , or cloth dampened with a simple soap solution, scrub at and around the soles of your shoes to remove surface grime. You will need to get an application cloth or brush separately, but the cleaner comes in a spray that is easy to direct onto your shoe. After spraying it on your shoe, use a brush to work it into stubborn stains or dirty areas. Then, wipe away any excess, and rinse your shoe with regular water from the sink. You can use it on everything from boots to outdoor shoes and children’s sneakers. Wipe the shoes clean – Remove remaining soap and moisture away using a clean, dry towel, and assess whether the leather needs another round. If so, repeat step three. If your leather shoes feel slightly damp, leave them to air-dry for a short while in a well-ventilated area.

Baking soda – Knowing how to clean with shoes with baking soda can be very handy. Make a simple paste of baking soda and warm water, before gently scrubbing into the stained area with a toothbrush. Allow the paste to work its magic for a few minutes, then wipe off with a damp cloth and let the shoes dry.
