Starring Mel Gibson in his iconic, career-launching role, George Miller's influential cult classic Mad Max remains a bombastic, wildly manic piece of entertainment about a lone police officer barely gripping to his sanity in a bleak, nihilistic vision of a dystopian future. Mad Max Fury Road was shot digitally and was finished as a 2K DI and is exactly the same disc as has been previously released. In the ravaged near future, a vengeful Australian police officer sets out to stop a violent motorcycle gang. Falling into an encampment led by the relatively peaceful Pappaga llo (Mike Preston), Max at first schemes to steal their oil, but soon becomes the group’s reluctant defender against the hulking Humungus (Kjell Nilsson) and his ruthless marauders.

There are some decent enough effects, vehicles, gun shots and crashes etc that have good separation.I thought Emil Minty was incredible as The Feral Kid who helps Max rediscover his humanity again and gives the film a little more heart. Mad Max: The Road Warrior – Same as previous releases, an Introduction by Leonard Maltin, an Audio Commentary by George Miller and the Road War: The Making of The Road Warrior feature. As in the previous films, our reluctant antihero has already given up hope of a new civilization, a lone scavenger driven purely by survival, and Hardy does a marvelous job stepping into the role that made Mel Gibson a worldwide star. Admittedly she is awesome but you can’t help feeling like it’s setting up a spin-off (which is now currently in production). Still, my colleagues and I have come to the general consensus that we should hold the UDH format to a higher standard and be much more conservative with our video scores.

The film looks and sounds great with a nice intro from legendary critic Leonard Maltin who loves the film; it also has a commentary and a behind the scenes documentary so at least it has that. Let’s look at the film itself which to this day remains one of the all-time great action pictures wasting no time getting going and moving at a nearly relentless pace. As a 4K UHD set, the package from Warner is pretty good; the native 4K image on Mad Max is terrific, clean, well detailed and bright colours with strong blacks, while the DTS-HD MA 5. The road to Valhalla is shiny and chrome on Ultra HD Blu-ray, but it’s also a treacherous and unforgiving journey with a few hazardous obstacles and mishaps along the way.

The action still holds up with incredible stunts, explosions and chases only (nearly) matched by Fury Road; this didn’t need CG to beef up the visuals which makes it feel rawer. Mad Max has been a staple of my life since I was in my teens, watching Mel Gibson play the famous road warrior across three films.
